Hi Morrigan,

there are alot of different download-trojans and so there are several ways how they infect your system as well. Most of them are connected to spy/adware and you get them while surfing if you dont configure your browser porperly. There are some basic rules you need to be aware of to keep your system safe from all different kind of malware:

1. Update your system and software regularly, at least once a week, especially Windows, your Browser, your mailclient and all software youre using on the net.

2. Configure that software properly, NEVER allow a program to execute anything (especially activex, java, active scripting) by itself. Disable it or let it ask you. Be careful to not allow anything you dont know to be secure and trustworthy. Dont use IE/Outlook but more secure and better software like firefox, opera, thunderbird. Disable any active-scripting and the display of html in your mailclient, all mails should be set to "text-only".

3. Use your brain. The highest chance to get anything malicious is surfing porn/warez-sites or using filesharing. NEVER allow anything to execute there.

5. Dont download programms or other stuff from untrustworthy pages (porn, warez, serialz). Theres a good chance it will be "bundled" with trojans. Dont download every shareware to try it ou either, check the net before, if its really without any ad/spyware. Only install software you REALLY need.

6. Dont open mails or especially mail-attachments your didnt ask for and know for sure they are secure. Delete everything else

Again: use your brain. You can backup all that with a decent Antivirus-program, but its much more important to get used to all that rules, because every malware needs to be executed, either by the user himself or by using badly configured or bugged programs. By strictly following the rules you can avoid giving any malware the chance to be executed and infect your system.
